Post Falls, Idaho
September 1999Daytona brand perennial ryegrass blend
from Jacklin Seed/Simplot Turf & Horticulture
is a blend of three high-performance varieties, Advent, Monterey and TopGun. Each of the
varieties has been chosen for their diversity and adaptation to varying environments,
applications and management regimes.
Daytona is best suited for interseeding into established
stands of bluegrass, fine fescue, tall fescue or perennial ryegrass that have been thinned
or damaged by traffic, disease or environmental stress. It can also be used for
overseeding of winter dormant bermudagrass on golf courses, sports fields and residential
properties. Features include:
- Daytona produces turf cover quickly with high germination
and aggressive tillering.
- Because it has improved resistance to insects and various
diseases, Daytona may need fewer pesticides.
- It has a high degree of tolerance to traffic and compacted
soil, which helps make it ideal for rigorous sports turf applications.
- Improved environmental stress tolerance helps it stand up to
a variety of adverse conditions, such as drought.
T'he perennial ryegrass blends that make up Daytona each
bring their own distinctive performance capabilities to the mix:
- Monterey, which was developed from Rutgers
University germplasm, is bred for exceptional spring and summer performance, and
resistance to such diseases as dollar spot, red thread, brown patch and Fusarium
patch. According to University of Maryland/National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP)
ratings in 1997, it garnered high marks for its tolerance to gray leafspot.
- TopGun, according to 1999 NTEP reports, has
top rankings for percentage of live cover during spring, summer and fall. It greens up
early and maintains heat tolerance during the summer. Well suited for the Transition Zone,
TopGun also received high marks for its resistance to dollar spot, red thread, brown patch
and gray leafspot.
- Advent tied for the #1 ranking among 123
other perennial turfgrass varieties across 24 U.S. locations in the 1991-1994 NTEP trials.
This variety has high root shoot density, resistance to summer heat and drought, the
ability to maintain its dark green color through the cooler months, and improved
recuperative ability. Advent has high resistance to many major ryegrass diseases.
