Dow AgroSciences LLC has agreed to sell
formulated cloransulam-methyl herbicide to Monsanto Company
for resale, under terms of an agreement finalized today. Cloransulam-methyl is the active ingredient in
Dow AgroSciences' FirstRate* herbicide, a popular product for control of tough broadleaf weeds
in soybeans. Upon approval of necessary registrations, Monsanto will also sell a
cloransulam-methyl herbicide product under the brand name Amplify beginning with the 2001
sales season. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"Cloransulam-methyl provides excellent control of cocklebur, common and giant ragweed,
sunflower, morning-glory and velvetleaf from either soil-applied or post-emergence applications,''
said Ben Kaehler, Product Manager for Dow AgroSciences. "We believe it is an ideal compliment
to glyphosate in sequential or tank-mixed applications on Roundup Ready soybeans because it
provides residual control and rounds out control of large-seeded broadleaf weeds. Making this
product available from both Dow AgroSciences and Monsanto will ultimately give farmers more
choices in designing the best weed control program for their soybean crop.''
"Although many growers will continue to prefer a treatment of Roundup alone, we felt it would be
beneficial to offer a product that provides a residual option. When registered, Monsanto's Amplify
will be very effective for use as a tank mix with Roundup UltraMAX for post-emergence
applications on Roundup Ready soybeans,'' said Dean Hendrikson, U.S. Roundup Brand
Manager. "Growers also should know that Amplify would be eligible for the Monsanto's Roundup
Rewards program.''
Roundup Rewards is a program that rewards growers who use Monsanto technologies and
Roundup branded herbicides.
Registration for application of Amplify is pending state approval. Dow AgroSciences LLC, based
