American Cyanamid launches global brand for herbicide tolerant crops
Parsnippany, New Jersey
July 8, 1999

American Cyanamid Company has announced an innovative herbicide tolerant crop production system. The CLEARFIELD* Production System, Cyanamid's global brand for herbicide tolerant crops, was introduced at the FIS World Seed Congress Melbourne Australia.

The CLEARFIELD brand is the latest in Cyanamid's global herbicide tolerant crop initiatives. Cyanamid was the first company to market a herbicide tolerant crop with the launch of herbicide tolerant corn in 1992. The CLEARFIELD Production System utilizes Cyanamid's portfolio of biological materials and intellectual property combined with partner p rovided germplasm and technology, to develop herbicide tolerant crops and custom designed herbicide solutions for key crop production markets.

"Cyanamid's strategy is to approach the global market in a way that makes the technology broadly available, while optimizing the value of the technology for the farmer, seed companies and Cyanamid,'' says Vic Smith, assistant vice president for herbicide tolerant crops. "We are working with multiple third party seed companies to provide a broad choice of advanced seed products to
customers.''

Cyanamid's global development work with seed partners involves both non- transgenic and genetically modified approaches to improved crops. With these partners, Cyanamid offers the broadest range of herbicide tolerant genetics derived through non-transgenic methods.

"The significance of the CLEARFIELD brand is that it will make it easier for growers to match superior seed with custom-designed weed control'' Smith said. "Growers will simply look for the unique CLEARFIELD symbol on their preferred hybrids and/or varieties, then match it with a CLEARFIELD herbicide custom-designed for that crop.''

The imidazolinones are a unique family of crop protection products for weed control that were developed by Cyanamid Agricultural Products Research Division. The imidazolinones work on an enzyme which is present in plants but not in animals, birds, fish or insects. This selectivity makes the imidazolinones environmentally compatible while providing outstanding weed control.

American Cyanamid Company is a subsidiary of American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP - news), one of the world's largest research-based pharmaceutical and health care products companies. It is a leader in the discovery, development, manufacturing and marketing of prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications.
