Twenty years of successful breeding at Valley Seeds
Alexandra, Victoria, Australia
January 1998

Valley Seeds Pty. Ltd. has crown from humble beginnings in 1972. Since then, its record of achievement is outstanding. About 20 years ago, the company decided to embark upon a plant breeding investment which would take it into a league dominated by multi-national companies. Valley Seeds is 100% Australian-owned and is the only Australian-owned company to breed temperate grasses.

In a recent publication of the Plant Breeders Rights Journal the record is clear, with Valley Seeds either breeding or being licensee to over a third of all temperate grasses listed with Plant Breeders Rights since its inception in 1987.

All temperate grasses

Cocksfoot 1 1
Tall fescue 3 2

Other significant achievements of Valley Seeds are as follows:

  • First Australian company to breed a perennial ryegrass.
  • Registered the first forage Brassica, Westerwolds Ryegrass, Rigidum Ryegrass, Cocksfoot and Brome.
  • Valley Seeds has bred four (4) perennial ryegrasses and has nearly three-quarters of the short-lived ryearasses with registration granted.

While breeding and registrations are one thing, performance is still the ultimate test of success. Valley Seeds' varieties are top performers in every category. Amongst the best are :

ECLIPSE Short-Lived Ryegrass

Best rust scores and leading winter production of all varieties

ROPER Perennial Ryegrass

Superior root growth to resist pulling out in pastures, along with excellent production.

CAMEL Perennial Ryegrass

Most drought tolerant variety available.

GUARD Rigidum Ryegrass

The first variety to be Annual Ryegrass Toxicity Resistant and is not a carrier of C.C.N. and Take-All between cereal crop rotations.

Managing Director, Don Coles, said of their achievements, "My late father, Jim Coles, the founder of Valley Seeds, initiated many of the breeding and evaluation programmes that led to these results, and he would be proud of the breakthroughs which we have achieved in pasture grass development". He further commented "Valley Seeds has many more varieties to be commercially released over the next few years, which will confirm our position as the best breeder in Australia. Farmers can buy our varieties with the knowledge that they are buying from the only 100% Australian-owned grass breeding company".
