EuropaBio welcomes OECD consultation on genetically modified foods
Edinburgh, Scotland
February 25, 2000

On February 27th, EuropaBio, the European Association for Bioindustries, welcomes the OECD Edinburgh Conference on the Scientific and Health Aspects of Genetically Modified Foods as a well-timed contribution to the ongoing debate about biotechnology.

The OECD has done invaluable work in the context of biotechnology over the past 20 years. On
that basis, the Edinburgh Conference will be an ideal platform for an informed discussion of the
scientific aspects of the use of genetic modification in food production.

Agricultural biotechnology is perceived as a significant innovation in food production and has been
met with both a great deal of support and opposition. Stakeholders have expressed differing views
on agricultural biotechnology. The way food is produced, cultural preferences, public values,
social and ethical considerations and international trade issues are amongst the ``non-scientific
concerns'' that feature in the public debate.

Whilst the biotechnology industry acknowledges that the concerns of society go beyond science,
scientific understanding and sound scientific principles will have to remain at the core of public
policy and regulatory decisions governing the use of biotechnology. EuropaBio is, therefore,
pleased with the purpose of the Edinburgh Conference, according to the OECD: ``to achieve a
constructive dialogue on the safety of GM food, with an emphasis on the underlying science and
on human health.'' The European Bioindustries Association values dialogue and welcomes the
OECD-sponsored stakeholder consultations as a means to exchange information and views.
EuropaBio hopes that the Conference will contribute to a better understanding of the science as
well as the present benefits and future potential of biotechnology.

EuropaBio represents 40 corporate members operating world wide and 13 national biotechnology
associations (totaling around 700 SMEs) involved in research and development, testing,
manufacturing and distribution of biotechnology products. EuropaBio, the voice of European
bioindustries, aims to be a promoting force for biotechnology and to present its proposals to
industry, politicians, regulators, NGOs, and the public at large.
