AgrEvo's hybrid vegetable seed company Nunza B.V., the
holding company of the Nunhems group and Sunseeds
Company, announced today that they signed a letter of intent with the shareholders of
Rio Colorado to acquire 100% of Rio Colorado Seeds Inc. for an undisclosed amount. The
parties are striving for completion of the acquisition by the end of June 1999. The total
staff of Rio Colorado is 35.
Rio Colorado Seeds is a Bakersfield, California, USA based vegetable seed company
specializing exclusively in the research, production and marketing of hybrid onion seeds
to be cultivated worldwide. The company has research programs in short day, long day and
intermediate onion types. The research stations are based in Bakersfield, California, and
Caldwell, Idaho.
According to Mr. Henk Lange, Nunza’s CEO, "this acquisition strengthens
Nunza’s position in onions worldwide and matches perfectly with the existing onion
line of Sunseeds. Rio Colorado will be integrated in Nunza’s Sunseeds division with
headquarters in Morgan Hill California U.S.A. and responsibilities for the Americas.
Nunza is one of the worlds leading hybrid vegetable seed companies with subsidiaries in
Europe, the Middle East, the USA, Chile and India as well as a joint-venture in China. The
group operates under the brand names "Nunhems" and "Sunseeds" and
employs around 1000 people. In addition
to plant breeding in over 25 vegetable crops, Nunza has a strong position in biotechnology
and seed technology for the development of seeds with a high added value. Through
AgrEvo’s biotechnology subsidiary Plant Genetic Systems (PGS) in Gent (Belgium),
Nunza has access to a wide range of important biotechnologies to support their plant
breeding activities.
AgrEvo is a global player in Biotechnology, Seeds, Crop Protection and Environmental
Health. The company markets a wide range of products for enhancing crop production,
together with applications for urban pest control. AgrEvo operates in more than 70
countries with approximately 8600 employees. Sales for 1998 were DM 4,2 billion. In
December, 1998 Hoechst AG and Rhône-Poulenc SA announced their intention together with
Schering AG to merge their
agricultural interests to form Aventis CropScience.

Nunza B.V., das niederländische Gemüsesaatgutunternehmen der Hoechst Schering AgrEvo
GmbH, hat mit den Anteilseignern der Rio Colorado Inc. einen letter of intent über den
Erwerb der Rio Colorado Seeds Inc. unterzeichnet. Die Akquisition soll bis Ende Juni 1999
abgeschlossen
werden. Nunza wird Rio Colorado Seeds zu 100 Prozent übernehmen. Die Zahl der Mitarbeiter
beträgt 35. Die Kaufsumme wurde nicht genannt.
Rio Colorado Seeds ist ein Unternehmen für Gemüsesaatgut, das in Bakersfield,
Kalifornien, USA, ansässig ist und sich ausschließlich auf die Forschung, Produktion und
Vermarktung von Hybrid-Zwiebelsaatgut für den weltweiten Anbau spezialisiert hat. Das
Unternehmen betreibt
Forschungsprogramme für Kurztags- und Langtagssorten sowie für Mischtypen. Die

eine hervorragende Ergänzung des Zwiebelsortiments von Sunseeds. Rio Colorado wird in
Sunseeds Company integriert. Sunseeds, mit Sitz in Kalifornien, ist für die nord- und
südamerikanischen Märkte zuständig.

Tochtergesellschaften in Europa, im Mittleren Osten, in den USA, in Chile und in Indien
