Zeneca Seeds has announced the launch of Garst® brand seed corn in Canada. Garst will be the brand name used for all new hybrids produced and sold in Canada by Zeneca Seeds. "The registration and launch of several new technologies has given us the ideal opportunity to launch the Garst brand in Canada", says Len Hawkins, Eastern Canada Business manager for Zeneca Seeds. "Garst is a name associated with performance and technology in the United States. With Garst hybrids, we will be delivering new technology to the field for Canadian corn producers." Hawkins notes that Garst is a leader in the development of biotechnology with its patented WhiskersTM gene insertion technology.

Zeneca is launching several new thechnologies into the Canadian seed corn market under the Garst Brand. As well, all Garst hybrids that contain a novel trait gene will be identified with the G-STACTM label for easy grower identification. Garst G-STAC hybrids contain novel traits that add value and new crop production options for corn producers.

G-STAC technology includes:

• A full range of SMARTTM IT corn hybrids that contain a gene making it tolerant to
  new Patriot® herbicide
• Liberty Link® corn hybrids
• Bt protection against European corn borer
• Patented Garst high Ph corn hybrids
• Patented G-STAC hybrids that contain more than one novel trait. These "BLT" hybrids contain novel trait genes that make them simultaneously SMARTTM IT, Liberty Link® and protected against European corn borer.

Hawkins notes that all new Zeneca Seeds hybrids and hybrids containing G-STAC novel traits will be marketed under the Garst brand name. To eliminate any possible confusion between conventional and novel trait hybrids, the company will be marketing conventional hybrids in 1998 and 1999 under the widely known Zeneca Seeds label.

Zeneca Seeds is planning a full slate of crop tours this summer including a series of Advanced Seed Technology Tours. The Advanced Seed Technology Plot Tours will feature G-STAC SMART® corn hybrids, Liberty Link® hybrids, BLT hybrids and high pH corn hybrids.
