August 10, 1999

Advanta Seeds has announced the launch of Garst brand seed corn in Quebec.

Garst is the brand name Advanta Canada (formerly Zeneca Seeds) will use for its corn product line being offered to Quebec farmers starting this fall.

"Garst brand corn has been extremely successful in the US. It is a brand name that is rich in tradition, which farmers associate with quality and good science," notes Kent Schubert, Business Manager for Advanta Canada in Quebec.

This fall, the Garst product line will consist of hybrids previously sold under the Zeneca Seeds brand along with new Garst hybrids launched this September.

"Our new distribution alliance with SEMICAN of Plessisville, along with our lead position in developing novel traits in combination with exciting new high performance corn genetics has given us the ideal opportunity to launch the Garst brand in Quebec", notes Schubert. "Our partnership with SEMICAN is very exciting, Producers will now be able to access Garst hybrids and the new levels of performance these hybrids represent through Semican's experienced and highly professional sales and distribution team."

Advanta Canada and Garst Seed are together recognized as leaders in the development of high performance hybrids and leading edge DNA and trait technologies. These include the patented "Wiskers" gene transformation system used to incorporate and stack novel input and output traits in crops including corn and canola. Garst is the North American leader in the development of CLEARFIELD(TM) IT corn hybrids that are tolerant to IMI based herbicides, as well as G-STAC(R) hybrids that combine multiple novel traits including SMART IT, Roundup Ready, Liberty Link(R) and various Bt technologies. Garst is also the market leader in the development of high pH tolerant corn, which is now being tested in Canada.

"Advanta Seeds is planning a full slate of Garst plot tours this summer," notes Daniel Masse, Sales Agronomist with Advanta Seeds in Quebec. "These plots will feature not only our G-STAC hybrids that contain herbicide tolerant or stacked herbicide tolerant and Bt traits, but also our strong line of conventional hybrids that provide outstanding yield potential for Quebec producers.'
