Flying far: York, WA grain grower Leon Ryan’s GRDC supported Nuffield Scholarship will take him around the world to investigate demand for staple cereal and pulse foods and the social impact of higher food prices

Nuffield Scholarships have proved their value to Western Australia’s grain industry time and time again since their inception in Australia in 1950.

By being exposed to the best techniques, practices and technology the world has to offer, Nuffield Scholars gain a wealth of knowledge that benefits themselves and the wider grain growing community.

Take 2007 Nuffield Scholar, Simon Tiller, for example.

Mr Tiller, from Esperance, used his scholarship to examine ‘Global Trends in Grain Production’, talking to growers, grain marketers, bankers, agronomists and consultants from around the world.

Among other things he looked at value-adding grain, integrating other businesses into farming, marketing and the biofuels industry.

He shared that knowledge with appreciative fellow growers at the 2009 Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported Western Australian No-Till Farmers Association conference.

This year, York grower, Leon Ryan, is investigating grain supply and demand issues in China, India, USA, Argentina and Canada, thanks to his 2009 GRDC supported Nuffield Scholarship.

At a time of global economic crisis the in-depth perspective Mr Ryan will gain from his studies will prove vital to the future of the state’s grain industry and the communities that depend on it.

They’re just a couple of examples of why the GRDC continues to enthusiastically support the Nuffield Scholarship.

Nuffield Scholarships are unique in presenting growers who’ve already developed practical knowledge and experience with the means to explore the most advanced techniques from overseas - creating a fertile cross-pollination and a blossoming of new ideas.

It’s a very special privilege to win a Nuffield Scholarship, but all WA growers are winners from this very valuable institution.
