Help prevent fungicide resistance

.

Australia
May 7, 2009

If herbicide resistance isn't a big enough worry, growers now confront another menace - fungicide resistance.

With many grain crops receiving three or more fungicide applications a year from compounds with the same mode of action, it's a recipe for disaster.

However, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) supported Australian Centre for Necrotrophic Fungal Pathogens (ACNFP) at Murdoch University is fighting back against the threat. And it wants your help.

ACNFP Director and GRDC Western Panel Deputy Chair, Professor Richard Oliver, wants to hear from growers if they see fungal diseases developing after full-rate treatment with fungicides.

He's looking for fungi from lesions or pustules on well sprayed leaves.

Air-dried leaves with wheat yellow spot, Septoria nodorum and barley net-blotch could be posted in paper envelopes, with details of site, cultivar and fungicide, to Kasia Rybak, ACNFP, Health Sciences, Murdoch University, South Street, WA 6150.

Barley or wheat growers with powdery mildew should also contact Kasia, who will send a sampling kit or arrange to visit.

For more information, contact Professor Oliver, Tel 08 9360 7404 or email roliver@murdoch.edu.au
