Mourning the passing away of Tim Dessert

.

El Centro, California
May 5, 2009

Timothy Alan Dessert of El Centro, California, passed away quietly while he slept in his home in the early morning hours of April 29, 2009. Tim was born August 22, 1956, in National City, California, son of Ray and Libby Dessert. He was married to Lucie McCormack for 18 years. He was a wonderful husband and a devoted father to his daughters Savannah Ray and Abbey Rose.

Tim was a life-long professional in the vegetable seed business, a talented salesman who knew the details of seed production, management, and marketing like few people do. Tim grew up in the seed business in El Centro. After graduating from Cal Poly, Pomona with a degree in Agricultural business, he immediately returned to the family seed business. At Dessert Seed Company he was soon given responsibility for the Asian sales territory and traveled extensively throughout Asia, concentrating on Japan and Thailand.

In late 1985 Tim left ARCO Seed Company, which had earlier purchased Dessert Seed, to take charge of Far East sales at Neuman Seed Company in El Centro. In late 1986 Tim left Neuman Seed to work with his father at Cal Seed Company which had been started by his brother Spike. The company was renamed Dessert’s Cal Seed and Tim quickly built up the custom seed production business for the company, concentrating on production in Imperial and Mexicali valleys for his Asian customers. Due to his expertise, sales flourished.

In the seed business, Tim was known for his honesty under all circumstances. A great listener, Tim was always willing to answer questions and share advice about the seed business and life in general.

Family and friends remember Tim as an original, cosmopolitan thinker with a zest for interesting ideas, art, music, and the possibilities for the future. A spiritual and compassionate man, he was a dedicated member of the Saint Mary’s Catholic Community. He loved his family and was fiercely proud of his wife Lucie and daughters Savannah and Abbey. Tim loved the outdoors, hunting, and off-road races and was a great sports fan, especially of the San Diego Chargers. He was a true friend to many and offered up whatever help he could when his friends were in need.

His survivors include his wife, Lucie, daughters Savannah Ray and Abbey Rose, his sister Marie Hinkley, and brothers Raymond Bernard (Spike) Dessert III, Richard John Dessert, and James Michael Dessert as well as numerous other relatives and many friends. We will miss him very much.

A viewing will be held at 6:15 pm followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm on Friday, May 8, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, 795 S. La Brucherie Road, El Centro. The funeral mass will be held at 10 am Saturday, May 9, at Saint Mary’s church with burial immediately following at Mountain View cemetery, highway 111, Calexico.

A memorial educational fund for Tim’s children is being established at Wells Fargo Bank, El Centro.
