Wyffels Hybrids is pleased to announce Dr. Terry L. Niblack as recipient of the 2009 Wyffels Hybrids Award for Faculty Excellence at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Niblack is a professor of soybean cyst nematode management and extension at the University of Illinois Department of Crop Sciences. Dr. Niblack has spent the last eight years with the department and educates students in nematology with emphasis on the biology and management of the soybean cyst nematode (SCN). She also instructs students on how to scout for nematodes and the use of damage thresholds for management recommendation. Her research addresses many current issues in nematode management, including work leading to new or revised recommendations for management of SCN in Illinois.

“Dr. Niblack’s work has been influential, and we’re excited to help support researchers who assist growers in managing pests that affect their profitability,” said Dr. Fritz Behr, vice president of research at Wyffels Hybrids. “Wyffels Hybrids was built on the foundation of innovation in farming methods, and we are proud to continue the company’s tradition of supporting the research efforts of outstanding individuals.”

The award, established in 2004, focuses on the pursuit for innovative methods to improve crop and livestock production, a life-long focus for William Wyffels, Sr. and Alma Wyffels. A major influence on the Wyffels farming operation was Darl Fike, the local Henry County Extension agent. The relationship between Wyffels and Fike led to numerous experiments and University of Illinois demonstrations on the Wyffels' farm, many crop innovations, and ultimately to a fledgling seed business which would become Wyffels Hybrids Inc. This award is presented annually to a crop sciences faculty member, recognizing excellence in the areas of teaching and advising, research, extension and outreach, and public service.

Wyffels Hybrids, headquartered in Geneseo, Illinois, is one of the nation’s largest independent seed corn companies.
