The AUSVEG board have appointed Richard Mulcahy as the new Chief Executive Officer of AUSVEG. AUSVEG is the national peak industry body representing the interests of Australian vegetable and potato growers.

Richard Mulcahy is a former parliamentary representative with nearly two decades of experience in employer associations. Mr Mulcahy said that he was delighted to accept the position as Chief Executive Officer of AUSVEG.

“I would like to thank Interim CEO Robert Lawler for his leadership over the past 12 months as AUSVEG adopted its new constitution.

“I am determined to do everything I can to provide help to Australia’s vegetable growers who are facing increasing challenges due to the global financial crisis, extreme weather events and global competition.”

Elected as the Member for Molonglo in the Legislative Assembly of the Australian Capital Territory in 2004, Richard Mulcahy has held numerous portfolios including Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the ACT in 2006 and Shadow Treasurer from 2004 to 2006. He also served as Chairman on the Standing Committee on Public Accounts for the Legislative Assembly of the ACT from December 2004 - 2007.

Prior to serving as an elected representative he was National Executive Director of the Australian Hotels Association from 1992 to 2003.

Under his leadership the association became one of Australia’s highest profile industry organisations. Other senior roles he has held include:

- Director with William Wrigley Junior Company in Chicago USA
- Chief Executive Officer of the Confectionary Manufacturers of Australia
- Principal Personal Assistant to the former Premier of Victoria, the late Sir Rupert Hamer.

AUSVEG Chairman John Brent said, “Richard Mulcahy has a proven track record of leadership. He will bring to AUSVEG a wealth of experience and qualifications that can move the organisation forwards.”

Mr Mulcahy was appointed as AUSVEG CEO on Monday 20 April and will be officially introduced to the industry at the Vegetable Industry Conference in Melbourne from May 4-6. “I am eager to meet with vegetable growers at conference and listen to what they have to say,” he said.
