BioDiagnostics introduces patent-pending novel DNA-based diagnostic test that detects annual ryegrass contamination in perennial ryegrass seed lots

.

June 10, 2009

BioDiagnostics, Inc. (BDI), River Falls, Wisconsin has developed a patent-pending novel DNA based diagnostic test that detects annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) contamination in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) seed lots.

This new DNA test named Bonafide BDI™ Pure PRG has dual application:

  • it can detect the percentage of annual ryegrass contamination in perennial ryegrass seed lots.
  • it can also be used on individual seedlings to distinguish annual and intermediate from perennial ryegrass.

The test is able to identify molecular markers for specific characteristics that define annual ryegrass. This can determine with a very high degree of certainty, whether or not a plant or seed is annual or perennial.

The PCR test protocol and DNA primers will be licensed to seed testing laboratories that demonstrate proficiency in performing the test.

Additional details will be announced later this summer.
