Postemergence weed control can
help rescue yield loss due to late planting.
With more than 92 percent of corn planted, according to the
USDA, sprayer booms are replacing planters in many fields.
Because weather conditions delayed planting in almost every
region this year, postemergence herbicides will get even more
attention when it comes to managing weed competition to maximize
yields.
“Weather can cause late planting, which in turn can reduce
yields, but yields depend on a formula much more complicated
than simply the planting date,” said Jeff Springsteen,
Bayer CropScience
corn and soybean selective herbicides product manager. “If
weather has delayed planting, it also may have impacted other
parts of the crop production equation. For example, weather may
have prevented planned applications of pre-emergence herbicides,
making postemergence herbicides that much more important for
growers.”
Whether growers are making postemergence herbicide applications
this year as part of a total post or planned two-pass herbicide
program,
Laudis® herbicide
can help them effectively take down tough grass and broadleaf
weeds, such as shattercane, woolly cupgrass, barnyardgrass,
waterhemp, giant ragweed, kochia and wild-proso millet.
Laudis is approved for use on field corn, white corn, seed corn,
sweet corn and popcorn. It has a flexible application window
from VE up to V8 growth stages in field corn and popcorn, and
from VE up to V7 in sweet corn. Laudis combines a powerful
herbicide active ingredient with a highly effective crop safener
to deliver outstanding weed control in harmony with corn — and
future cropping plans.
Retailers, applicators and growers saw the performance of Laudis
exceed high expectations in 2008, the first year it was
available.
“I applied Laudis to one grower’s 800-acre field and we saw
great results. We used Laudis as a total post program with
Steadfast® and a little bit of atrazine,” said Gerrit Thompson,
applicator and crop consultant with Crop Production Service in
Roachdale, Ind. “We compared Laudis to Callisto® and Laudis did
a phenomenal job. In the past, we’ve seen a little bit of burn
with a Steadfast and Callisto tankmix. But when we used Laudis
we didn’t see any burn at all.”
Springsteen added that Laudis is rainfast in just one hour, so
if the wet weather conditions that hovered over many regions in
2008 extend into 2009, growers need just a short window of clear
weather for application.
