Mycogen Seeds Marshalltown, Iowa corn production facility celebrates 75 years

Marshalltown, Iowa
July 30, 2009

Providing high-quality seed corn was the vision when the Marshalltown, Iowa site was founded and remains true today as Mycogen Seeds celebrates 75 years of seed corn production. The production facility handles the entire seed corn process and ships seed corn around the country for farmers to plant in their fields. The seed production facility was started in 1934 and remains a vital part of the community three quarters of a century later.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary, Dow AgroSciences and Mycogen Seeds are pleased to announce a $5,000 donation to the Green Mountain Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service that protects approximately 64-square miles in the Northeast corner of Marshall County.

“The volunteer fire department is a vital part of our community, and we are so pleased to be able to provide a donation to enhance safety and further equip our fire department volunteers who provide tireless service in emergencies,” said Julie Boillat, Mycogen Seeds Production Leader.

“The Green Mountain Fire Department and EMS thanks Dow AgroSciences and Mycogen Seeds for the donation. We will be using these funds for the purchase of equipment that will be both beneficial to the Mycogen Seeds location and also to the community that we serve. Some of the equipment that we will be purchasing includes rescue ropes, carabiners, harnesses to be used for entering seed/grain bins, and an air monitor for verifying air quality before entering confined spaces. The air monitor can also be used for checking carbon monoxide levels when called out for carbon monoxide alarms in local homes.” Steve Reis Fire Chief Green Mountain Fire Department and EMS.

The Marshalltown production site was started in 1934 by four brothers (Elvis, Lester, Kenneth, and Dwight Lynk) and their brother-in-law (Earl Baird) who had enough seed corn to plant one and a half acres on their family farm. In 1958, the business had become so successful that it included 300 dealers for Lynk’s Hybrids and the site was purchased by Dow AgroSciences in 1987.

“Partnering with our communities is a tradition at Dow AgroSciences and Mycogen Seeds, and our philosophy is to invest in our communities where our employees live and work. Helping the volunteer fire department is just one way we illustrate our commitment,” says Tim Maniscalo, Corporate Contributions leader, Dow AgroSciences and Mycogen Seeds.
