Denise
Maurice is joining the
Canola Council of Canada (CCC) as the new vice-president,
Crop Production effective today. She will be responsible for
managing the agronomy team and industry issues related to
production.
"Denise is well known in the industry for her agronomic
expertise, her dynamic presentations, and her ability to create
innovative production resources for growers," says CCC President
JoAnne Buth. "I am pleased to welcome her to our team, and I
know she will direct her considerable energy toward the
industry’s 2015 targets."
The canola industry has set a target of 15 million tonnes of
sustainable canola production by 2015.
"I am confident we can achieve our 2015 production targets,"
says Maurice. "The Council’s agronomy team has an excellent
reputation for providing timely assistance to growers across the
Prairies, and that is particularly valuable in a year like this
one. I am very proud to have the opportunity to lead this highly
respected team."
Maurice has worked across the prairies in weed research and
extension for government and in management of extension, crop
protection programs and marketing with Westco, Agricore United
and most recently Viterra. She led the development of the
Certified Crop Advisor Certification program in Canada and has
received many industry awards for her leadership. She holds a
B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba.
Background on the CCC Crop Production team:
The Crop Production team is focused on grower profitability. In
order for the industry to achieve its 2015 production and
quality targets, the CCC implements an extensive crop production
program. Some highlights follow:
- Consults with 20,000
prairie canola growers annually through individual contacts,
meetings and trade shows.
- Coordinates the Export
Ready communications program to ensure growers are
delivering the highest quality product for Canada’s export
markets.
- Helps growers maximize
their profitability through awareness campaigns such as Seed
Smart.
- Advises growers and
industry about the best practices in canola production
management through an annual media release program, the
e-newsletter Canola Watch, and other outreach activities
such as Canola Colleges.
- Coordinates frontline
issue management on issues such as insect infestations,
clubroot, frost, heat and storage management.
- Oversees the Prairie
Canola Variety Trials.
- Coordinates the 5-year,
6.2-million Prairie Canola Agronomic Research Program and
the Canola Agronomic Research Program.
