The Canola Council of Canada, in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission, Saskatchewan Canola Growers Association, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Manitoba Canola Growers Association, and Alberta Canola Producers Commission are hosting the fourth annual Air Drill Clinic at the Gallagher Centre in Yorkton, Saskatchewan on February 10, 2009.

The Air Drill Clinic is a unique opportunity for interaction between agronomists, producers, and seeding equipment manufacturers. Participants will get hands-on instruction on how to better use their machinery. The clinic will also allow producers who are thinking of upgrading their machinery to compare what different manufacturers have to offer.

"This clinic is well worth the investment of time for growers and agronomists," says Jim Bessel, senior agronomy specialist with the Canola Council in Saskatoon. "By using their air drills to full potential, growers can improve stand establishment and maximize canola yields."

The manufacturers will cover topics including:

  • key maintenance points and schedules
  • air cart specifics such as air flow and metering system settings for canola, cereal, and pulse crops
  • tips on tool bar leveling, depth setting, and opener performance under various soil conditions
  • suggestions on monitoring settings and options

The tentative list of manufacturers includes Morris, Bourgault, John Deere, Case IH, Seed Hawk, and New Holland.

The afternoon agronomy session, "Seeding For Success" will be presented by Doug Moisey, agronomy specialist with the Canola Council of Canada. This informative session will cover stand establishment, tips for diagnosing early season field problems, and suggestions for how to manage risk with agronomic practices.

Registration and coffee will begin at 9:30 am and the clinic will run from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Cost is $25 per person, which includes GST and lunch. Register before Friday, February 6 to be entered to win a 1,000,000 candle power lantern!

Three crop management CCA credits have been approved for the air drill clinic.
