Best practice for Roundup Ready canola

.

Australia
January 15, 2009

At the GRDC supported Better Oilseeds conference, Perth, Victoria-based consultant Dr Kate Burke summarised best practice suggestions for Roundup® Ready canola based on her observations of demonstration crops.

These included using appropriate pre-emergent herbicides, early sowing, adequate nutrition and two applications of Roundup Ready herbicide at the cotyledon and four leaf stage.

"In paddocks with high ryegrass populations and a strong glyphosate history, there's a risk of glyphosate resistance and the extra strategies identified in Monsanto's paddock risk assessment management option guide (PRAMOG) process are important to avoid resistance. Good management is essential.

"Wisely used, Roundup Ready canola can be a powerful tool to strategically drive ryegrass numbers down and allow paddocks to return to cereal production," Dr Burke said.
