De Ruiter Seeds
presents major innovations in the search for flavor, color and
yield in South European tomatoes, like with the introduction of
three new TYLCV resistant varieties for truss medium and large.
This helps the North European retailer to offer its consumer
good and tasty tomatoes throughout the winter season. During our
tomato event ’Pick your winter profits’ in Berlin last week, De
Ruiter Seeds highlighted its breeding program in tomatoes to the
European trade and retail.
A lot has happened since the introduction of long life tomatoes.
We have succeeded in creating varieties that match the
specifications of the most important spring and summer
varieties. Having the same quality for 12 months have become
possible. Over a hundred tomato varieties were tested on three
locations in order to select ten new varieties that combine
agronomical benefits with consumer satisfaction. Yield, cold
tolerance, TYLC resistance continue to be important, but so does
taste and colour. To present and discuss this topic, De Ruiter
Seeds organized an International tomato event on the 4th of
February, at the Hotel Adlon Kempinski in Berlin.
The sustainable success of the tomato shelf is determined by
satisfied consumers and repeated purchase. Value for money is
more important than ever, as consumers are getting more
conscious in where to spend their Euro or Pound.
Three speakers highlighted the different aspects of the
mentioned issue in a brief presentation:
- According to David
Ucles, from the Spanish bank CajaMar, the industry faces
the challenge to consolidate, cooperate and create dedicated
supply chains. Besides this there’s an opportunity to escape
from commoditization by investing in quality.
- Kees van Beek,
Branch manager for Horticulture at ING Bank, presented a
summary of their study on the fruit and vegetable wholesale
sector. Convenience is the main topic for the next years,
not just in product development, but especially in B2B
convenience. This means that successful supply chains are
organized to answer the specific needs of clients, if
possible tailor made.
- Harry Klee, from
University of Florida, is the leading expert on tomato
aroma. Scientists continue to explore the components that
are responsible for the taste of tomatoes. A perfectly ripe,
sweet and aromatic tomato is a joy for the senses and the
key to consumer satisfaction and repeated purchases.
De Ruiter Seeds introduced three
new TYLCV resistant varieties for truss medium and large, like
Majoral. The new DRW 7704 is a rare combination of colour, shelf
life, TYLCV resistance and taste. For the snack and premium
segment, cherry plum tomato Cikito performs very well in the
unheated winter crops and has a super taste. For your cherry
truss segment there’s plenty of choice to outperform the
existing varieties by taste, quality, yield and resistance. We
are able to sample product until the end of March.
And there’s even more…! |
