In February 2008, barley industry
peak body, Barley Australia, announced to Western Australian
barley growers that their new variety, Buloke had gained its
malting accreditation.
There are now eight malting barley varieties available in
Western Australian (WA) and to help growers prepare for the 2009
crop, the Western Region Barley Council (WRBC) has released its
WA Malting Barley Variety Receival recommendations for the
2009/10 harvest.
This document declares market preference for Buloke in the
Kwinana-west and Esperance port zones and market acceptance for
Buloke in Kwinana-east and Albany-north if there is an early
season break (before early May).
It also states that the anticipated export malt market demand
for Buloke in the 2009/10 harvest is moderate to high and there
is also likely to be some demand for Buloke in the export grain
market.
Buloke may be new to the malting market but it is widely
expected to compliment Baudin in international brewing markets
and Joe White Malting (ABB) will be purchasing moderate
quantities of Buloke from the 2008/09 harvest for export as
malt.
CBH and AWB will also be purchasing a quantity of Buloke from WA
growers in 2008/09 so there will be segregations for the variety
in the Kwinana port zone and buyers will be active in the
Esperance port zone this harvest.
Seed sales figures and grower retained tonnage reports from
Buloke’s commercial partner, AWB Seeds, indicate a six fold
increase in the sown area of the variety between 2007 and 2008.
This reflects the impressive agronomic performance of the
variety and if Buloke now lives up to the positive end user
potential it has demonstrated in development, it is destined to
become a significant variety for Western Australian growers. |
