ICAC Researcher of the Year

.

Washington, DC
November 21, 2008

The world cotton industry does not have an international research institute. However, the ICAC helps to organize World Cotton Research Conferences and regional network meetings to facilitate communication among researchers. The world research conferences and regional meetings provide opportunities for cotton researchers to share their experiences through paper presentations, poster presentations and direct contacts. While, these conferences facilitate contacts among institutions and researchers, there is no international recognition of the work done by cotton researchers through awards and certificates.

The ICAC has initiated a system to recognize one cotton researcher every year and award him/her with an honorarium of US$1,000 and the title “ICAC Researcher of the Year.” The selected researcher will be invited to make a special presentation at the next Plenary Meeting during the technical session on his/her contributions to cotton research and his/her vision for the future of cotton technology.

An award panel of five anonymous judges headed by a university professor has been formed. The judges will scrutinize applications received from researchers in a uniform format. Researchers from universities and public sector research organizations will be able to apply for the award directly. Applications can also be made through their heads of institutions or a colleague can make a nomination with full details. Researchers from all disciplines of cotton production research including ginning, fiber quality and textile research are eligible for the award.

All candidates should provide information only in the format indicated If required, judges will contact applicants for addition information/clarification. Any application sent to an address other than the address on the ICAC webpage will not be considered. Nominations will be submitted on-line only, and information will go directly to the judges. Judges are independent of the ICAC Secretariat and the Chairman of the award panel will forward the name of the finalist to the ICAC Secretariat for announcement. Nominations will be accepted from January 1 to February 28 and the finalist will be announced on April 30 each year.

The International Cotton Advisory Committee is an association of governments of countries with an interest in cotton. The Secretariat of the Committee publishes information related to world cotton production, supply, demand and prices, and provides technical information on cotton production technology. Detailed statistics are found bimonthly in COTTON: Review of the World Situation, $180 per year via email, $215 per year in hard copy. A monthly outlook is available by email for $285 per year. Access to the latest weekly estimates of world cotton supply and use by the Secretariat is available on the Internet for $450 per year. Access Secretariat reports at www.icac.org.
