Further milestone in expanding
seeds business
Bayer CropScience's
vegetable seed business Nunhems
plans to invest EUR 15 million in the expansion of its U.S.
facilities in Parma, Idaho. "This investment lays the foundation
for the sustainable growth of our vegetable seed business in the
U.S. and worldwide," commented Dr. Joachim Schneider, Head of
the BioScience Business Unit at Bayer CropScience on the
occasion of the groundbreaking ceremony at the Parma site. "The
objective of the expansion of our seed production in the U.S. is
to efficiently meet the needs of our customers in the future."

The site in Parma, Idaho was founded in the mid 70s and became
part of Nunhems with the acquisition of Sunseeds in 1997. It is
responsible for the processing, packaging and storage of
important vegetable hybrid seed crops like carrots and onions.
This includes varieties with good yields, disease resistance as
well as excellent quality, nutrition and appearance. Today, the
Parma facility processes more than 80 percent of the global
carrot and onion seeds produced by Nunhems. From here, these
seeds are shipped to customers in the U.S. and worldwide.
"In addition to the recent purchase of 11 hectares adjacent to
the Parma facility, we plan to build new seed processing and
storage facilities," added Douwe Zijp, Chief Executive Officer
of Nunhems. "Furthermore, we will implement technical upgrades
in equipment as well as other improvements. During this process
we will do everything possible to minimize any disruption in our
day to day activities." The site expansion will also lead to the
extension of administrative functions and other departments
including Logistics, Customer Service, Marketing & Sales and
Quality Assurance.
The Parma site has 150 full time employees and will be close to
25 hectares. Nationwide, Nunhems has approximately 260
employees. Other U.S. locations include seed production
locations in all western states as well as research facilities
in Brooks (Oregon) and Bakersfield, Lodi, Davis and Salinas
(California).

Weiterer Meilenstein im Ausbau des Saatgutgeschäfts
Bayer CropScience investiert 15 Millionen Euro in den Ausbau
seines Werks in Parma im US-Bundesstaat Idaho.
"Mit dieser Investition legen wir den Grundstein für ein
nachhaltiges Wachstum unseres Gemüsesaatgutgeschäfts Nunhems in
den USA und weltweit", erklärte Dr. Joachim Schneider, Leiter
des Geschäftsbereichs BioScience von Bayer CropScience, beim
feierlichen Spatenstich am Standort Parma. "Ziel der Erweiterung
unserer Saatgutaufbereitung in den USA ist es, die Bedürfnisse
unserer Kunden auch in Zukunft effizient befriedigen zu können."
Der Standort in Parma, Idaho, entstand Mitte der Siebzigerjahre
und gehört seit der Übernahme von Sunseeds im Jahr 1997 zu
Nunhems. Hier werden wichtige Hybridsorten von Karotten,
Zwiebeln und anderem Gemüsesaatgut verarbeitet, verpackt und
gelagert. Dazu zählen Sorten, die hohe Erträge liefern, gegen
Krankheiten resistent sind und hervorragende Qualitäts- und
Nährwerteigenschaften aufweisen. Im Werk in Parma werden heute
über 80 Prozent des gesamten Karotten- und Zwiebelsaatguts, das
von Nunhems weltweit produziert wird, verarbeitet. Von Parma aus
wird dieses Saatgut an Kunden in den USA und in aller Welt
geliefert.
"Zusätzlich zu dem Erwerb des rund 11 Hektar großen
Nachbargrundstücks in Parma planen wir den Bau neuer Anlagen für
Saatgutaufbereitung und -lagerung", fügte Douwe Zijp,
Geschäftsführer von Nunhems, hinzu. "Darüber hinaus werden wir
technische Aufrüstungen an den vorhandenen Anlagen vornehmen.
Störungen im weiter laufenden Betrieb sollen dabei auf ein
Minimum reduziert werden." Die Erweiterung der Anlagen wird auch
zum Ausbau der Verwaltungsfunktionen sowie anderer Abteilungen,
zum Beispiel Logistik, Kundendienst, Marketing und Vertrieb
sowie Qualitätssicherung führen.
Das Werk in Parma beschäftigt mittlerweile 150 Vollzeitkräfte
und wird inklusive des neuen Grundstücks fast 25 Hektar groß
sein. In den USA beschäftigt Nunhems rund 260 Mitarbeiter. Zu
den weiteren Standorten von Nunhems in den USA zählen neben
Anlagen für die Saatgutproduktion in allen westlichen
Bundesstaaten auch Forschungseinrichtungen in Brooks (Oregon)
sowie in Bakersfield, Lodi, Davis und Salinas (Kalifornien).
