Brilliant is Best in 2008

The results are in: Brilliant from Seminis was awarded the 2008 Best Tasting Tomato on the Vine by ChefsBest, an independent judging organization dedicated to recognizing and honoring food products in the United States.

“Seminis tomato breeders have used our strong germplasm to produce a variety that not only appeals to consumers, but growers as well,” said Mr. Joep van de Burgt, Seminis Protected Culture Sales Manager for NAFTA. “Using the best growing tactics is an important factor in producing award-winning tomatoes. By implementing these tactics, growers at Eurofresh Farms have helped to make Brilliant the best tomato.”

Recently Brilliant has been produced exclusively at Eurofresh Farms in Wilcox, Arizona. Now it is available for all commercial growers in North America.

A generative tomato variety, Brilliant flowers quickly and produces exceptionally high yields of quality fruit. The tomatoes are firm and maintain their size, weighing an average of 145 grams. Brilliant has an excellent disease package offering growers resistance to Fusarium wilt races 1 and 2, Fusarium crown and root rot, leaf mold, tomato mosaic, tomato spotted wilt virus and Verticillium wilt race 1.

“For growers what is so great about Brilliant is that it is fast flowering for a uniform set, meaning that tomatoes ripen equally,” Van de Burgt said. “For consumers Brilliant has a great taste that we hope will entice them to choose it when shopping at the grocery store.”

In the ChefsBest blind taste test Brilliant was judged against other tomato varieties based upon its appearance, aroma, flavor, taste and texture, as well as its flavor and texture in a buffalo mozzarella, basil leaf and olive oil recipe. Several competing brands were evaluated by professional chefs from the San Francisco Bay Area that were selected for their industry experience.
