The Wheat Industry Expert Group
(IEG) today released its Discussion Paper on the future
provision of industry development functions under the Australian
Government’s wheat marketing reforms.
The Minister for Agriculture,
Fisheries and Forestry, Tony Burke, established the IEG in
January this year to advise him on the delivery of industry
functions including research and development, variety
classification, receival standards, promotion and trade
advocacy.
IEG Chairman John Crosby urged all interested industry
stakeholders to comment on the discussion paper.
“The paper considers a range of key functions and services for
the industry, many of which will no longer be provided by the
current single desk holder, AWB (International) Ltd, under the
Government’s proposed reforms to the wheat marketing
arrangements,” Mr Crosby said.
“Importantly, the paper assesses each development function
against criteria including options for delivery, the role of
government, transitional issues and the necessity of each
development function.
“Everyone in the industry with an interest in the delivery of
these functions should read the discussion paper and consider
making a submission.”
Submissions close on 27 March 2008, and will be made public on
the IEG’s website as they are received. The IEG must report to
Mr Burke by 24 April 2008.
The Discussion Paper is available on the Department of
Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry website at
