Dieuwertje van der Does is met
haar thesis ““A possible role for Glutaredoxins and protein
S-glutathionylation in regulation of TGA factors in Systemic
Acquired Resistance” uitgeroepen tot winnares van de
Rijk Zwaan Plant Sciences
Award 2007. Een onafhankelijke jury onder leiding van Prof. dr.
M.A. Haring, Afdeling Plantenfysiologie, Universiteit van
Amsterdam heeft twee genomineerde theses beoordeeld op betekenis
voor de beroepspraktijk van veredeling en zaadkwaliteit,
originaliteit, wetenschappelijke kwaliteit en verzorging van het
rapport. Van der Does, studente aan de Universiteit van
Amsterdam, verrichtte haar thesis bij Duke University, North
Carolina in de verenigde Staten. De jury selecteerde haar thesis
unaniem als de beste.
Het juryrapport spreekt over de thesis als een indrukwekkende
studie over de rol van glutathion additie in de
signaaltransductie route die leidt tot systemische resistentie
in de modelplant Arabidopsis thaliana. Met verschillende
genetische en biochemische technieken heeft zij aannemelijk
gemaakt dat er een rol weggelegd is voor “glutathionylatie” van
transcriptiefactoren die de afweerreactie coördineren.
Toekomstig onderzoek moet duidelijk maken welke enzymen
verantwoordelijk zijn voor deze modificaties en hoe de
activiteit van de TGA2 transcriptiefactor beïnvloed wordt “in
planta”.
Dieuwertje van der Does ontving uit handen van juryvoorzitter
Haring de Plant Sciences Award, een check van 1.500 euro en een
werkbezoek naar een dochterbedrijf van veredelingsbedrijf Rijk
Zwaan. Van der Does koos voor het Rijk Zwaan-bedrijf in Almería,
Spanje
De Plant Sciences Award is een initiatief van groenteveredelaar
Rijk Zwaan uit De Lier. Hiermee probeert het bedrijf bij te
dragen aan een meer aantrekkelijk imago van de plantenkundige
studies in Nederland. Het aantal studenten in deze studies op
diverse universiteiten is de afgelopen jaren sterk gedaald.
Daarmee ontstaat voor de gehele groentesector het gevaar van
onvoldoende opgeleide medewerkers.

Zwaan Plant Sciences Award 2007
Dieuwertje van der Does was
declared the winner of the
Rijk Zwaan Plant Sciences Award 2007 with her thesis “A
possible role for Glutaredoxins and protein S-glutathionylation
in regulation of TGA factors in Systemic Acquired Resistance”.
An independent jury, headed by Prof. Dr. M.A. Haring, Department
of Phytophysiology at the University of Amsterdam, assessed two
nominated theses on their practical significance for the plant
breeding profession and seed quality, originality, scientific
quality and the care taken in the presentation of the report.
Van der Does, a student at the University of Amsterdam, wrote
her thesis at Duke University, North Carolina, in the United
States. The jury unanimously selected her thesis as being the
best.
The jury’s report describes the theses as an impressive study of
the role of glutathione addition in the signal transduction
route, which leads to systemic resistance in the model plant
Arabidopsis thaliana. Using various genetic and biochemical
techniques, she has made it seem plausible that there is a role
for “glutathionylation” of transcription factors which
co-ordinate the defence reaction. Future research will have to
clarify which enzymes are responsible for these modifications
and how the activity of the TGA2 transcription factor is
influenced “in planta”.
The chairman of the jury, Prof. Dr. Haring, presented Dieuwertje
van der Does with the Plant Sciences Award, a cheque in the
amount of € 1,500 and a working visit to a subsidiary of seed
breeding company Rijk Zwaan. Van der Does chose the Rijk Zwaan
company in Almeria, Spain.
The Plant Sciences Award is an initiative from vegetable
breeding company Rijk Zwaan in De Lier, the Netherlands. It is
the company’s way of trying to contribute to a more attractive
image of plant science studies in the Netherlands. The number of
students attending these studies at the various universities has
dropped dramatically over the years. This is creating the real
danger that there will be a shortage of trained employees
throughout the vegetables sector.
