Dow AgroSciences LLC has received one of the U.S.
government’s top environmental honors, the 2008 Presidential
Green Chemistry Challenge Award, for spinetoram, an innovative
insect control technology derived through the fermentation of a
naturally occurring organism followed by chemical modifications.
The award, presented by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) on behalf of the White House, recognizes technologies that
incorporate the principles of green chemistry into chemical
design, manufacture and use. Green chemistry, also known as
sustainable chemistry, encompasses all aspects and types of
chemicals and processes that reduce negative impacts on human
health and the environment including reduced waste, safer
products, and reduced use of energy and resources.
Dow AgroSciences has won multiple Green Chemistry Awards, and
spinetoram is the result of the company’s long-term commitment
to green chemistry principles. Spinetoram is derived through the
fermentation of a natural soil organism and is the newest
product from the spinosyn family which features the favorable
environmental profile generally associated with biological
products with the efficacy of synthetic technologies. It is sold
under global brand names DELEGATE™ WG and RADIANT™ SC and in
some countries as EXALT™ and ENSURE™ insecticides. It is
currently registered in the United States, Mexico, Canada,
Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, and New Zealand.
“Spinetoram is an excellent example of a product that was
designed to meet customer needs in the fruit, vegetable, tree
fruit and tree nut markets in a way that leaves a softer
footprint on the environment,” says Jerome Peribere, president
and CEO of Dow AgroSciences. “We are pleased to receive this
award as it illustrates our commitment to green chemistry.
Additionally, it honors cooperation between government agencies,
industry and our company who worked together to quickly bring
forward this product that provides an important solution for
problem pests in high value fruit and vegetable markets.”
This unique chemistry allows producers to benefit from
advantageous fermentation technology without sacrificing
performance. The mode of action of spinetoram, shared by
spinosad which won the 1999 Green Chemistry Award, is unique and
not shared by any other family of insecticides. This makes
spinosyns an ideal fit for resistance management programs, while
offering excellent product performance.
