West Des Moines, Iowa
June 16, 2008

The global vegetable seed market has hit a value of $3.5 billion, and is poised to grow yet more, driven largely by dramatic shifts in Asia. That’s one finding of a first-ever and newly-released analysis, conducted by the Context Network. The Global Seed Sector 2020 Outlook: Major Vegetable Crops report assesses the market’s global, regional and country-level trends.

Principle author, Mark Nelson said, “This multi-client study by The Context Network is an in-depth investigation and analysis of the factors expected to drive market expansion in the global vegetable seed sector through 2020. It’s a complicated marketplace, influenced by variable adoption of hybridization and biotechnology, among myriad other factors.”

Nelson noted the analysis revealed the growing role of a powerful Asian market. The region will emerge as an important driver in global growth, pushing the vegetable seed sector from $3.5 billion to $6.2 billion (excluding trait premiums) by 2020. Commercial introduction to biotech-enhanced vegetable seeds is expected to add an additional $0.3b, resulting in a $6.5b global, commercial vegetable seed sector in 2020, Nelson said.

Context Network Partner, Tray Thomas added, “This investigation is truly a first, in its global nature and its tremendous depth. We examine influences on vegetable crop acreage and production, and seed pricing at the grower level, and project vegetable crop production and consumption, as well as forecasts for changes in seed consumption and seed market values.”

All vegetable crop industry stakeholders, including crop input suppliers, equipment manufacturers, seed developers and distributions and policy makers are encouraged to learn more about this meaningful analysis. For more information, visit www.contextnet.com.
