In a recent public address,
President Leonel Fernandez of the Dominican Republic said that
agricultural biotechnology and genetically modified (GM) crops
will be employed as soon as possible to assist local farmers in
raising their levels of crop production. He said that old
methods of farming have to be considered, but the Dominican
Republic has to enter the modern age of farming and crop
production. Fernandez also stated that in order to raise food
and feed production, the government will make available about
315 million square meters of state-owned lands in the short
term, for lease to farmers.
