Sunflower researchers continue to
make good progress in developing resistance to both Sclerotinia
head and stalk rot.
Progress reports indicate that
many hybrids are now outperforming the resistant checks in
misted disease nurseries with high levels of disease pressure. A
significant effort is in place to identify resistant genes from
perennial and annual wild species and to transfer those genes
into cultivated hybrids.
Molecular marker identification is
a goal in this research to screen genotypes and breeding
populations to improve breeding efficiency.
