Energy yield increases of 16-25
per cent per hectare in new triticale varieties have been
achieved with the help of new technology that rapidly determines
the nutritive value of grains for livestock.
Near Infrared Calibrations (NIRS) are about to be licensed for
commercial use by the GRDC
and Pork CRC, with sub-licenses being issued to feed mills and
feed test laboratories.
"This technology will allow grain growers and pork producers to
more accurately value triticale and other grains for livestock,
which will greatly benefit both groups," Dr Roger Campbell, CEO
of Pork CRC said.
Dr Campbell said nutritionists estimate that an additional one
mega joule in the digestible energy content of a grain is worth
$30/tonne or $9/pig to the pig producer, due to improved feed
conversion efficiency and reduced feed costs. |
