United Kingdom
December 4, 2008Twenty one
varieties have been added to the HGCA Recommended Lists for
2009/10.
It has been a
bumper year for new winter wheats with eight new recommendations
spread across all four nabim groups. “There really is
something for everyone,” said HGCA RL Technical Manager, Bill
Handley. “We have a new Group 1, three Group 2’s, one Group 3
and three Group 4’s.”
Gallant
is the first variety since 2002 to go straight into nabim group1
and it is higher yielding than Xi19, with better grain quality
and agronomic characters. The new nabim Group 2 varieties
Panorama, Ketchum are very high yielding, while
Qplus is the first bread-making variety with orange wheat
blossom midge (OWBM) resistance. Scout is a nabim Group 3
variety with good grain characteristics. Viscount and
Cassius are soft-milling Group 4 varieties while Grafton
is hard-milling.
Four varieties
have been removed from the list including Riband which was first
recommended in 1989 so came close to a 20 year reign on the
List.
The only new
winter Barley is Volume, a very high yielding hybrid
6-row type. The spring barley list has three new entries all of
which are potential malting types. They are Cropton,
Concerto and Forensic.
The winter
oilseed rape list has been completely revised with separate
lists for the East and West and North region. “Recently we have
seen performance in the two regions drifting apart”, said HGCA
Recommended Lists Manager, Dr Jim McVittie. “We now see few
varieties equally suited to both regions so it makes things much
simpler to separate the Lists completely”.
Eight new
varieties have been added: PR46W21, Dimension, Hammer
and Vision for the East and West Region: Cuillin
and Emerson in the North Region; and, for the first time,
two semi-dwarf varieties, PR45D03 and DK Secure.
DK Secure is recommended for both regions while PR45D03 is only
recommended in the East and West Region.
Summaries of
the new HGCA Recommended Lists are available on the HGCA website
www.hgca.com and the full HGCA Recommended Lists booklet
will be distributed early in the New Year.
HGCA
Recommended Lists for 2009/10
Winter wheat
There have been
eight additions to the HGCA Recommended List for winter wheat
Gallant
-
Gallant was
added to the 2009 HGCA Recommended List as a very high
yielding nabim Group 1 variety
-
nabim
reports that Gallant’s milling and baking qualities have
been consistent over three years of testing and are as good,
if not better, than other current varieties
-
Provisionally classified as a ukp bread wheat for export
-
Has the
highest yield of the nabim group 1 varieties: 1% higher than
Xi19 and 5% higher than Solstice
-
Has given
protein contents similar to Solstice
-
Good
specific weight
-
High
Hagberg falling number
-
Early
maturing – similar to Cordiale
-
Susceptible
to brown rust
-
Breeder/ UK
Agent: Syngenta Seeds Ltd (www.newfarmcrops.co.uk).
Panorama
-
Panorama
was added to the 2009 HGCA Recommended List as a very high
yielding nabim Group 2 variety
-
nabim
reports that Panorama has shown good grain and milling
characteristics but that baking quality has been variable
and overall it produces bread of moderate quality. This will
probably make it more suitable for use in blends
-
Provisionally classified as a ukp bread wheat for export
-
High
untreated yield
-
Yields
relatively well as a second wheat
-
Stiff straw
-
Good
resistance to yellow rust but susceptible to eyespot
-
Breeder/ UK
Agent: Nickerson (www.nickersonseeds.co.uk).
Ketchum
- Ketchum was added to the
2009 HGCA Recommended List as a very high yielding nabim
Group 2 variety
- nabim advises that Ketchum
has a tendency to produce bread with slight weaknesses in
quality and with a greater variability in crumb structure
than some other varieties
- Provisionally classified
as a ukp bread wheat for export
- High untreated yield
- Yields relatively well as
a second wheat
- Moderate Hagberg falling
number
- Moderate straw strength
- Good resistance to mildew
and yellow rust
- Breeder/ UK Agent:
Syngenta Seeds Ltd (www.newfarmcrops.co.uk).

added to the 2009 HGCA Recommended List as a specific
recommendation for growers wanting a nabim group 2
bread-making variety with resistance to orange wheat blossom
midge
-
nabim
advises that over three years of trials results there was
variability in baking quality between seasons. Most millers
will only be able to use restricted proportions in
bread-making grists
-
Provisionally classified as a ukp bread wheat for export
-
Yield
around 6% below the highest yielding group 2 variety but is
the only bread-making variety on the Recommended List with
resistance to OWBM
-
High
untreated yield
-
Moderate
Hagberg falling number
-
Stiff straw
-
Good
resistance to yellow rust and no major disease weakness
-
Breeder/ UK
Agent: Nickerson (www.nickersonseeds.co.uk).
Scout
-
Scout was
added to the 2009 HGCA Recommended List as a high yielding
soft-milling nabim Group 3 wheat with good grain quality
characteristics
-
nabim
reports that Scout shows quality attributes similar to
Claire. From three years of trials results it has been
consistently good in its processing qualities
-
Provisionally classified as a uks soft wheat for export
-
Similar
treated yield to Robigus
-
High
untreated yield
-
Good
specific weight
-
Below
average performance in distilling tests
-
Stiff straw
-
Limited
data from tests in 2008 suggests that, like Claire, Scout
appears to have slow primordial development and so may be
useful for early drilling
-
Good
resistance to yellow rust, brown rust, Septoria nodorum and
eyespot
-
Resistant
to orange wheat blossom midge
-
Breeder/ UK
Agent: Senova Ltd (www.senova.uk.com).
Viscount
- Viscount was added to the
HGCA Recommended List as a very high yielding, soft-milling

as a uks soft wheat for export. Concerns over ability of
variety to meet export specifications for Hagberg falling
number
- Rated as good for
distilling
- High untreated yield
- Good resistance to yellow
rust, brown rust and Septoria nodorum
- Resistant to orange wheat
blossom midge
- Relatively low specific
weight
- Limited data suggests the
variety may have below average resistance to sprouting
- Breeder/ UK Agent: KWS UK
Ltd (www.kws-uk.com).
Grafton
-
Grafton was
added to the HGCA Recommended List as a specific
recommendation for those growers wanting an early maturing
variety to spread the harvest. It is a hard-milling Group 4
feed variety
-
High
treated and untreated yield
-
High
specific weight
-
High
yielding in second wheat trials
-
Limited
data from tests in 2008 suggests that, like Claire, Grafton

as provisional uks. Concerns over ability of variety to meet
export specifications for specific weight and Hagberg
falling number
-
Very high
yields in the North region
-
High
untreated yield
-
High
yielding in second wheat trials
-
Good
resistance to yellow rust, brown rust and Septoria nodorum
-
Rated as
acceptable for distilling
-
Relatively
low specific weight and Hagberg falling number
-
Breeder/ UK
Agent: Nickerson (www.nickersonseeds.co.uk).

In
spring-sown trials it has given yields around 3% below
Tybalt but with higher protein content and specific weight
-
It tends to
give moderate Hagbergs – similar to Belvoir
