A new lupin contestant joins the
fight again Black Pod Syndrome (BPS) to help southern lupin
growers in Western Australia (WA) boost their under-performing
lupins.
New variety WALAN2224 will be released on September 18 at the
Esperance Downs Research Station Field day and will be available
for planting in 2008.
GRDC supported
Department of Agriculture
and Food WA researcher, Dr Peter White said the new variety
had good resistance to BPS and yielded higher than Quilinock*.
"Lupins in WA's southern agricultural regions have a reputation
for yielding less than half their potential four tonnes per
hectare and BPS can contribute to these low and variable
yields," he said.
The new variety will hopefully improve yields in the Esperance
region.
"WALAN2224 is likely to replace Quilinock* and Mandelup* in south
coastal areas prone to BPS," Dr White said.
