In 2007, growers are once again
facing barriers that are common to soybean farming in the
central United States. From pests such as bean leaf beetle to
diseases like frogeye leaf spot and sudden death syndrome, in
addition to severe drought in some areas, crop threats again
will contribute to yield losses that can jeopardize a grower’s
bottom line.
With the current trend of fewer acres of soybeans planted each
year, there is increased pressure to boost soybean yields.
Effectively combating problems such as disease, pests and
drought is key to maximizing yield potential.
“The best way to avoid these types of problems is to carefully
choose which soybean varieties to plant,” says Jack Walker, NK
area agronomist with Syngenta
Seeds. “Accurately evaluating field conditions this year
will help growers make more educated planting decisions going
forward. It is important for growers to select varieties that
are up to the challenges of their area.”
These pests and diseases, if left uncontested, can reduce
soybean yields significantly. The Agricultural Research Service
branch of the USDA estimates that yield losses due to soybean
diseases fluctuate between 10 and 15 percent, annually.* Soybean
cyst nematode alone caused an estimated loss of 9 million metric
tons worldwide in 1998. According to Integrated Pest Management
Centers, when frogeye leaf spot is severe, losing 10 to 15 Bu/A
is common. Serious cases of sudden death syndrome can lead to
nearly total losses.**
Fortunately, soybean breeding is advancing to stay one step
ahead of these issues. Several new NK® Brand Late Group 3
soybeans performed especially well against these pressures in
2007. Formulated for the central Midwest region from Indiana,
Ohio, through central Illinois, southern Iowa and Nebraska,
northern Missouri and Kansas, these Late Group 3 soybean
varieties contain the Roundup Ready® trait, is soybean cyst
nematode-resistant and several deliver high protein levels. The
disease package these Late Group 3 varieties offer includes
resistance to prevalent diseases like sudden death syndrome and
frogeye leaf spot. Additionally, the varieties are extremely
stress tolerant, which would help combat some of the yield loss
associated with drought.
“Throughout the region, the Late Group 3 soybeans podded well
and are on pace to yield nicely this year,” commented Walker.
“We are seeing excellent results despite high levels of drought
stress.”
