The farmers of Western Canada have
made a major investment in a new state-of-the-art cereal testing
facility for the Canadian
International Grain Institute (CIGI).
Through the
Canadian Wheat Board’s special
account, funding of C$320,000 has been made towards equipment
for this important project. An additional C$600,000 in funding
for the project through the Canada-Manitoba Economic Partnership
Agreement was announced today.
The new equipment will enable CIGI
to expand its testing capabilities, which will assist in
development of new and existing markets for western Canadian
cereal crops. CIGI is a not-for-profit research and education
organization, funded by the federal government and by farmers
through the CWB.
Each year, it welcomes hundreds of
grain customers from around the world, providing technical
support and showcasing the quality and versatility of Prairie
grain. It also welcomes dozens of Prairie farmers throughout the
winter months to familiarize them with various aspects of
Western Canada’s grain industry.
The Canadian Wheat Board’s special
account is derived from unclaimed producer cheques and interest
earnings that are not part of the pool accounts. |
