Ames, Iowa
November 2, 2007

Results of the 2007 Iowa Crop Performance Test for barley and oats now are available online at http://www.agron.iastate.edu/icia/.

Copies of Iowa State University (ISU) Extension publication 2007 Iowa Crop Performance Tests – Oat and Barley (PM 1645) will be available Nov. 12, and may be requested by contacting Iowa Crop Improvement Association (ICIA) at (515) 294-6921 or the ISU Extension Distribution Center at https://www.extension.iastate.edu/store/ or (515) 294-5247.

The spring test included oats and barley. The oat test evaluated 23 varieties planted at Ames, Crawfordsville, Lewis, Nashua and Sutherland. The test at Crawfordsville was abandoned because of freeze damage that occurred in April. Warm and dry weather in May and June produced yields that varied across the state but were generally lower than the previous year. Test weights were higher than 2006. The statewide average yield was 121 bushels per acre with test weights averaging 34.1 pounds per bushel.

The barley test evaluated 15 varieties planted at Ames, Nashua and Sutherland. Average yields were 63 bushels per acre with test weights averaging 48.9 pounds per bushel.

ICIA's crop performance testing program is a cooperative effort with the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station at ISU and ISU Extension. The program offers unbiased, third-party information to Iowa growers on commercial seed they can purchase. Information on the adaptation and performance of hybrids and varieties is offered for alfalfa, barley, corn, oat, soybean and wheat.
