.

Washington, DC
May 1, 2007

Chinese imports are projected up by 1 million tons to 3.9 million tons in 2007/08, which could drive international cotton trade up 9% to 9.1 million tons. Imports by Turkey are projected stable whereas imports by Bangladesh and Indonesia are expected to rise slightly. However, imports by most other countries are expected to decline. Exports are expected to rebound in the United States and in Brazil, but are forecast stable or declining in most other large exporting countries.

World cotton production is forecast down slightly in 2007/08 to 25.1 million tons, whereas world cotton consumption is projected to increase by 2% to 26.7 million tons. Together, China (Mainland), India and Pakistan are expected to account for more than two thirds of world cotton mill use in 2007/08.
Consumption in the rest of the world is forecast down by 1% to 8.9 million tons in 2007/08.

World cotton ending stocks are forecast down by 4% to 11.4 million tons in
2006/07 and down by 11% to 10.2 million tons in 2007/08.
