For the 2006 Paris
International Agricultural Fair,
CIRAD produced a report on cotton. The English version of
the report has now been supplemented by seventeen thematic
sheets.
Cotton is a driving force in
development in West and Central Africa. However, yields are
stagnating in those countries, and their cotton production
chains are having to cope with market liberalization, the
agricultural aid policies of some major producing countries and
falling world prices.
Given the crisis in the production chain, research needs to meet
new challenges, notably making the chain more competitive and
production more sustainable and better quality, so as to build a
future for the crop.
To this end, research has modern tools at its
disposal: biotechnologies, computer modelling techniques and new
measuring instruments.
To rise to the challenges, CIRAD implements research projects in
partnership with national research structuires, higher education
and training establishments, cotton firms, private operators and
producers' organizations.
Its research projects are presented in seventeen sheets that are
now available in English:
