The American Malting Barley Association (AMBA) and
North Dakota State
University Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences (IBMS) have
released a publication titled "Harvesting,
Drying, and Storing Malting Barley" to help malting barley
growers produce the best quality crop possible.
The publication contains information on the types of potential
damage to malting barley kernels during harvesting and storage
and how to prevent or reduce problems.
Producing a high quality malting barley crop requires specific
conditions, many of which growers cannot control. To produce a
high quality crop, growers must control as many factors, such as
good harvest and storage practices, as possible to ensure the
end quality.
"Maltsters and brewers depend on American barley producers for a
good supply of quality grain," says Paul Schwarz, IBMS director.
"There has been a steady decrease in the supply of malting
barley for beer production, which makes the need for a quality
crop crucial. This publication can serve as a good resource for
growers seeking to produce and sell the best quality crop for
the best price, with the goal of creating a supply of excellent
barley and malt for maltsters and brewers."
"Harvesting, Drying, and Storing Malting Barley" is
available on the AMBA and IBMS Web sites at
