For 2007, all
Delta and Pine Land
Company Boll Box™ Bulk Delivery Systems for cotton will
contain 38 units of seed per box, instead of 32 units as in
years past, increasing the amount of seed in each box and
improving efficiency.
Since it first came onto the
market, the D&PL Boll Box has offered real time savings and
economic advantages for farmers by making planting go faster and
easier with less labor. Additionally, Boll Boxes have proven
their value in the distribution chain where the bulk containers
have made seed inventory management easier. This season the
efficiencies associated with Boll Boxes are optimized.
While all Boll Boxes will be
filled with 38 units per box, the total number of seeds per Boll
Box will vary, depending on whether the variety designation
begins with “DP” or “PM”. All Boll Boxes containing DP varieties
will be filled with 38, 250,000-seed-count units for a total of
9.5 million seeds per box. Boll Boxes containing PM varieties
will be filled with 38, 220,000-seed-count units for a total of
8.36 million seeds per box.
Because PM varieties on average
have a larger-sized seed than DP varieties they will be packaged
in 220,000 seed-count units in 2007. The price per bag and the
price per Boll Box of the PM varieties will reflect the fact
that they contain fewer seeds. An increase in the number of
seeds in all Boll Boxes, however, means producers can plant
additional acres no matter which variety they choose.
“Producers continue to tell us
they want to plant from Boll Box systems, so in addition to
putting more seeds into each box, D&PL is also increasing the
total number of Boll Boxes available for 2007,” said Charles
Michell, vice-president of U. S. Operations for D&PL. “As farm
sizes increase and labor gets more difficult to find, D&PL
continues to listen to and respond to farmers’ changing needs.”
