Information that helps livestock
owners get the best value from forage oats is available in a new
Queensland
Department of
Primary Industries and Fisheries
leaflet.
Called
Forage oats variety guide 2007,
the leaflet lists forage oat varieties suitable for Queensland
and northern NSW, and provides information on their
characteristics and management.
Toowoomba based DPI&F plant
breeder Bruce Winter said oats continued to be the main winter
forage crop in Queensland because it produced good quality feed
from autumn to early spring when most other pastures were
dormant.
Mr Winter said using improved
varieties and managing them better could lift production and
profits from crops.
“This brochure discusses
recommended management practices for growing oats for forage and
ways of minimising rust infection.
“It also provides images to help
identify rust and bacterial blight and tips on managing the
diseases,” he said.
