EMD Crop BioScience Inc. has hired Cathy Soanes as North American Marketing Manager.

Soanes brings a long and successful history working in the North American seed industry, from research through to the marketing side of the business. “The depth and breadth of her knowledge will be key in helping the company achieve its marketing goals,” says Dr. Scott Fleetwood, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for EMD Crop BioScience Inc.

Most recently, Soanes served as the Marketing Services and Communications Manager for NK Brand Syngenta Seeds, Inc. in Minnesota. “Cathy impressed us with her understanding of the marketplace, her strategic thinking and her brand management skills,” says Fleetwood. “She is a very strong addition to our marketing team.”

In her new role, Soanes will be responsible for market development in Canada and the Northern U.S. “I think EMD Crop BioScience is in a unique position, with unique technology that will help revolutionize the whole concept of adding value to seed and crops,” says Soanes. “The next few years are going to be an exciting time for the company.”

Originally founded as the Nitragin Company in 1898 after a Milwaukee entrepreneur purchased rights to a commercial process for the production of nitrogen-fixing rhizobia, Nitragin remained privately owned until 1982. In 1991 Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany purchased the business. Now headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, EMD Crop BioScience is committed to advancing crop-enhancing technologies and making these products available to growers worldwide.

Merck is a global pharmaceutical and chemical company with sales of EUR 6.3 billion in 2006, a history that began in 1668, and a future shaped by 30,000 employees in 63 countries. Its success is characterized by innovations from entrepreneurial employees. Merck's operating activities come under the umbrella of Merck KGaA, in which the Merck family holds an approximately 70% interest and free shareholders own the remaining approximately 30%. In 1917 the U.S. subsidiary Merck & Co. was expropriated and has been an independent company ever since.
