Beck’s Hybrids field days showcase insect-control research in simulated dry conditions

.

Atlanta, Indiana
August 17, 2007

Thousands of local growers are expected to attend the state’s largest field demonstration days hosted by Beck’s Hybrids of Atlanta, Indiana, August 23, 24 and 25, 2007 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “Becknology Days” will be held at the Beck’s Hybrids headquarters located at 6767 East 276 St. Atlanta, Indiana 46031. Attendees will have a chance to tour Beck's practical farm research plots, enjoy family activities, and learn more about the latest corn hybrids and technologies.

The highlight of Becknology Days is the Stress Mitigation Tent featuring Monsanto’s new YieldGard VT Triple™ technology side by side with other insect-control options. YieldGard VT Triple is the next generation of YieldGard® in-plant insect-control technology. The advanced science involves a more precise gene insertion process, known as Vector Stacked Transformation, or VecTran™, to create stacked-trait hybrids. The result is improved consistency, even better insect control and higher yield potential than the first generation of YieldGard products. For more information about YieldGard VT Triple technology, visit www.YieldGardVT.com.

The Stress Mitigation tent measures 40 by 66 feet and is designed to simulate drought-like conditions and measure corn root performance and insect control under extremely dry conditions. The tent has a clear vinyl top so that the plants can receive sunlight and heat, but remain sheltered from rainfall. As part of the test, the plot is artificially infested with corn rootworm larvae to test YieldGard VT Triple performance under environmental and pest stress situations.

“This is a good opportunity for farmers to see first hand how products utilizing the YieldGard VT Triple technology are performing this season” said Sonny Beck, president of Beck’s Hybrids.

In addition, each day starting at 11 a.m. there will be a full lineup of expert speakers covering a variety of topics. Speakers will include Dr. Rob Fraley, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for Monsanto, Purdue University Field Crops Entomologist Dr. Christian Krupke, Purdue University Corn Specialist Dr. Bob Nielson, and motivational speaker Jolene Brown.

Another must see activity is the “DeTerminator™” demonstration by CASE IH which is designed to test the planting accuracies of five brands of planters. In addition, any attendee that purchases Beck’s seed or a membership to the Indiana Soybean Alliance will quality for a gift certificate for 20 gallons of free biofuel.

Monsanto and AgWeb have developed an online sweepstakes sponsored by YieldGard VT Triple with the grand prize being a one-year lease of a Mack semi truck and grain hopper to be awarded at the Farm Progress Show. The truck will be on display at Becknology Days and will have custom made YieldGard VT signage on the hopper with a custom paint job, including the YieldGard VT Triple logo on the cab. AgWeb will be promoting the sweepstakes via Farm Journal, Top Producer, AgDay and AgWeb. Growers attending Becknology Days will be able to sign up at the event for a chance to win. Go to www.agweb.com/ygvttriple.com for rules and to register. YieldGard VT Triple also will be sponsoring the raffle of four personalized bomber jackets.

On all three days, there will be activities for the whole family to enjoy, including a kids corner with crafts and projects for the kids, a Longaberger baskets booth, and a photographer on hand to snap family photos. Another attraction includes strongman Dennis Rogers from ESPN’s Strongman Contest who will be performing feats of strength.
