Brassicas for food, fuel or fiction?

.

Australia
August 16, 2007

"Brassicas for Food, Fuel or Fiction?" is the theme of the 15th Australian Research Assembly on Brassicas (ARAB15) conference in Geraldton, September 10-14.

Australian farmers are benefiting from higher prices for canola due to international demand for oilseeds in biodiesel.

Keynote speakers at the GRDC supported conference will address the technical and economic questions surrounding the use of oilseed Brassicas for food or fuel.

Issues concerning GM canola and the newly released Australian Brassica juncea variety, Dune, will also be a highlight.

Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia researcher and ARAB committee member, Dr Mohammad Amjad said the conference provided the opportunity to showcase WA's oilseeds industry in challenging times.

"The challenge is to improve the profitability of growing oilseeds on acidic soils in short season and low rainfall environments," he said.
