ABARE to survey Australian vegetable growers

.

Canberra ACT, Australia
May 1, 2007

A new ABARE survey of Australian vegetable growers starts on 3 May, collecting information about the profitability of Australia’s vegetable growing regions and the issues faced by growers.

The survey has been commissioned by the Australian Vegetable Industry Development Group (AVIDG) which is seeking better information about production, the financial situation of growers, and the issues faced as they strive to maintain farm profitability.

This information is considered crucial for the implementation of Vegvision 2020 - the strategic plan for the sustainable future growth of the Australian vegetable industry.

‘Grower feedback on the issues they are dealing with in developing their farm business is important for identifying the research and development and grower assistance programs that will meet grower needs,’ explains ABARE’s Executive Director, Phillip Glyde.

‘This survey is an important first step in putting together the right mix of industry programs that will ultimately improve the long term viability of the vegetable growing industry,’ Mr Glyde added.

Mr Richard Bovill, AVDIG Chairman says the ABARE survey will provide the industry with essential information for making targeted investment decisions, and he encouraged growers to participate.

‘Growers who participate in this survey will be making an important contribution to the development of policies and programs that will impact on the future of the vegetable industry,’ Mr Bovill said.

‘Understanding the production and profitability profile of the industry is an important first step, however the AVIDG also wants to understand the type of technical, business and financial information services that growers think they need to make better production and marketing decisions.

‘Vegvision 2020 is the industry’s own strategic plan and focuses on strategies which will make a difference to the performance of the whole industry and add value to the commercial operations and services of existing sectors and businesses,’ Mr Bovill said.

All information provided by growers remains confidential as ABARE will only be releasing the results from the survey as farm averages. The ABARE interviews are conducted on-farm by identified ABARE data collectors.
The survey is scheduled to begin on 3 May and is expected to be completed by late May. Survey results are expected to be released at the end of June.
