Minnesota Department of
Agriculture lifts stop-sale
order on Dow AgroSciences
DAS-59122-7 |
Friday, April 27, 2007
St. Paul, Minnesota
The Minnesota Department of
Agriculture (MDA) today
lifted the stop-sale order for
Dow AgroSciences “DAS-59122-7,”
a corn rootworm resistance trait
found in some Pioneer and
Mycogen brand seed. The seed is
now approved for distribution
and sale in Minnesota.
MDA determined earlier this week
that Dow AgroSciences had not
complied with state regulations
requiring companies to obtain a
commercial use exemption
allowing the sale of genetically
modified (GMO) seed in the
state. Dow AgroSciences
subsequently submitted the
request for a commercial use
exemption to sell DAS-59122-7.
MDA reviewed this material and
today approved the request,
meaning the product is now
approved for sale in the state.
Farmers who have questions about
the affected products should
contact their local seed dealer
for more information. |

Minnesota corn growers hoping to
plant rootworm-resistant seed this spring can now look to
Garst,
NK® Brand and
Golden Harvest
for hybrids with Agrisure RW, the industry’s newest trait choice
for rootworm control. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture
expedited lifting of its “stop sale” order on Agrisure RW on
April 25, while issuing a stop sale order on the Dow
AgroSciences trait DAS-59122-7, marketed as Herculex® RW
Rootworm Protection and Herculex XTRA Insect Protection by
Pioneer and Mycogen.*
“With domestic corn demand escalating dramatically, corn growers
in Minnesota and throughout the country have access right now –
this planting season – to Agrisure RW, the very latest
technology choice to boost yields and improve quality,” states
Jack Bernens, Head of Syngenta Agrisure traits. “With full U.S.
regulatory approvals and the Minnesota go-ahead, our
industry-leading rootworm control technology is now being
delivered to growers in all corn growing states, including
Minnesota.
Agrisure RW is a modified synthetic (mCry3Aa) gene from Bacillus
thuringiensis (Bt) for control of northern, western and Mexican
corn rootworms. Extensive testing by Syngenta and nine Midwest
universities has shown that Agrisure RW increases yields by
32-bushel-per-acre over untreated rootworm-infested trials.
This spring, Syngenta is requiring all growers throughout the
U.S. who purchase seed with the Agrisure RW trait to sign a
Stewardship and Grain Use Marketing Commitment Agreement. This
stipulates that grain produced from Agrisure RW hybrids must be
directed to domestic uses, such as livestock feed and selected
ethanol plants.
Syngenta is a
world-leading agribusiness committed to sustainable agriculture
through innovative research and technology. The company is a
leader in crop protection, and ranks third in the high-value
commercial seeds market. Sales in 2006 were approximately $8.1
billion. Syngenta employs around 19,500 people in over 90
countries. Syngenta is listed on the Swiss stock exchange (SYNN)
