Seminis announces new distribution center for Canadian greenhouse growers

.

Oxnard, California
April 5, 2007

In an industry where decisions are made in a split second, Seminis has identified a new opportunity to supply its protected culture customers with the seed they need in the shortest amount of time possible. Starting in May, Seminis, the vegetable seed division of Monsanto, will begin using the Monsanto Facilities located in Chatham, Ontario to distribute seed to Canadian greenhouse growers.

“With this new distribution center in Chatham we can now ship seed to our Canadian customers overnight, or make it available for pick-up at the center on the same day the order is placed,” said Seminis Protected Culture Sales Manager, Joep van de Burgt.

Utilizing sales forecasts and history, Seminis will transfer seed from its processing plants in the Netherlands and United States in advance of forecasted sales. Along with the necessary customs paperwork and certificates, the seed will be available to growers at a moments notice. The seed will come packaged in foils to the Chatham facility, where it will be stored in a refrigerated system. When an order is placed, seed can be delivered overnight to the customer by courier service. The facility is also located within an hours drive of the primary greenhouse growers in Ontario, so if necessary, growers can come to the site and pick up their seed.

“The greenhouse industry is a unique market and there is a lot of opportunity for spot orders,” said Seminis Customer Service Manager, Candace Brooks. “If the seed to fill these orders resides in our facility in the Netherlands shipment into Canada could take up to three weeks between transport and customs. Now, using the Monsanto facility in Chatham, we can fill these orders quickly and get the customers what they need.”

The employees at the Monsanto Facility in Chatham are known for extending the highest level of customer service to their Monsanto corn and soybean customers. Seminis’ Canadian greenhouse growers can expect the same high level of service from the Chatham staff, who are committed to providing Seminis customers with the service they require in this dynamic industry.

Seminis, the vegetable seed division of Monsanto, is the world’s leading developer, producer and marketer of vegetable seeds. Its healthy, wholesome fruit and vegetable varieties are designed to reduce the need for agricultural chemicals, increase crop yields, reduce spoilage, offer longer shelf life, and create better-tasting foods and foods with higher nutritional content. Seminis operates in 150 countries and territories around the world.
