First case of metsulfuron-methyl resistance in doublegee in Western Australia

Herbicide resistance has reared its 'ugly head' again, but this time in the spiky weed, doublegee.

GRDC supported research has confirmed one case of metsulfuron-methyl resistance in doublegee within the northern agricultural region of Western Australia.

Department of Agriculture and Food senior research officer, Dr Abul Hashem said the population was five times more resistant to metsulfuron-methyl than other susceptible doublegee populations.

"Similar resistance may be present in many other doublegee populations that are yet to be identified and characterised in Western Australia.

"However, this metsulfuron-methyl resistant population is susceptible to all group C herbicides, such as atrazine, bromoxynil, cyanazine, diuron, metribuzin and simazine.

"More research is needed to confirm the resistance of this population to other group B herbicides, such as triasulfuron and imazethapyr," Dr Hashem said.
