Doors open for Western Australian wheat varieties
Western Australia
September 29, 2006

Western Australian wheat varieties EGA Bonnie Rock and Calingiri could hold the key to significantly increasing Australian wheat exports in the next five years, according to GRDC supported research by BRI Australia Ltd.

BRI project supervisor Sidi Huang said that because EGA Bonnie Rock and Calingiri were highly suited to Taiwan's noodle and dumpling requirements there was potential for Australian wheat exports to increase by 60 per cent within two years.

Mr Huang said Taiwan also opened doors into Asia and particularly China because many of its quality noodle manufacturers owned and operated plants in Taiwan.

"If Australia can increase exports to Taiwan by 300,000 tonnes in the next five years or so, that will be worth about $60 million to Australian grain growers," Mr Huang said.
