New Udon wheat variety released in Australia

Western Australia
October 4, 2006

New Udon wheat variety Binnu released by Agriculture Minister Kim Chance recently will help Western Australian growers maintain and possibly increase their share of the Japanese market in the face of increasing competition from Canada and the US.

Binnu, developed by the Department of Agriculture and Food,Western Australia (DAFWA) with GRDC investment, brings production advantages and better resistance to stripe rust than existing noodle wheats Calingiri and Arrino.

GRDC Western Panel wheat and barley breeding program member Ben Curtis said Binnu was superior to Calingiri in leaf rust resistance and also resistant to most strains of stem rust, requiring less fungicide than existing rust-susceptible noodle varieties.

"Binnu's greater defence against crop failure, due to rusts and improved noodle quality, will contribute to the long term viability of Udon noodle wheat production in Western Australia," he said.
